The political philosophy of Philip Pettit is one of the most important contemporary efforts to develop a complete republican theory of good government. His republicanism is grounded in two assumptions to which republican tradition in general has adhered in one way or another: first, that human beings are capable of generating civility or civic virtue, and, secondly, that human beings are intrinsically corruptible, or, that under certain conditions, they will exercise power arbitrarily.
