Isabelle Guitton : The hierodrama, a version of the oratorio in France on the eve of the Revolution. The hierodrama, which was never theorised despite its real existence around the time of the Revolution, appears as a version of the oratorio. This ephemeral genre, derived from religious music, was terminologically unstable and tried, by its dramatic and spiritual content, and by its musical essence, to renew the interest of the great motet. Although it rapidly disappeared, it nevertheless contained innovative aspects and thus ensured the survival of the oratorio at the end of the 18th century.Guitton Isabelle.
