L'architecture civile à Saint-Omer au XIXe siècle

In Saint-Omer, the XIXth century remained faithful to the classicism that had been a dominant feature of the previous century. Sobriety, sterness, austerity may sometimes be observed in both public and private buildings. The construction of the Town Hall, a beautiful building by Lefranc (1834-1840) resulted in a refurbishing of its surroundings and the creation of an admirable neoclassical set of buildings which might have served as basis for a larger urban landscape. The undertaking was never carried out an the vast Grand Place lacks a large unifying design. Throughout the city, the architectural activity displayed itself in quite a few important school and cultural buildings (school of Fine Arts, concert hall, theatre, library) but the urban landscape was not neglected : creation or embellishment of monumental fountains, bronze statue of the duke of Orléans, public gardens opened on Vauban's forticiation walls. And lastly, in 1904, there was the inauguration of the railway station, a beautiful and strong composition, wholly classical too.A Saint-Omer, le XIXe siècle est resté fidèle au classicisme qui avait été la marque du siècle précédent ; sobriété, rigueur, austérité parfois s'y observent dans les édifices privés et publics. La construction de l'hôtel de ville, bel édifice de Lefranc (1834-1840) a entraîné le réaménagement de ses abords et la création d'un admirable ensemble néo-classique qui aurait pu constituer l'amorce d'un grand décor urbain. L'entreprise ne fut pas poursuivie et l'immense Grand Place a manqué d'un grand dessein unificateur. A travers la ville l'activité architecturale s'est manifestée dans de très nombreux et importants bâtiments scolaires et culturels (école des Beaux-Arts, salle de concert, théâtre, bibliothèque) mais le décor urbain n'a pas été négligé : création ou embellissement de fontaines monumentales, statue en bronze du duc d'Orléans, jardin public dessiné sur les remparts de Vauban. Enfin, en 1904 était inaugurée la gare du chemin de fer, belle et forte composition, toute classique elle aussi.Gedurende de 19e eeuw blijft Sint-Omaars trouw aan het klassicisme dat reeds de vorige eeuw in zijn greep hield : zowel de openbare als private gebouwen zijn sober en streng. De bouw van het stadhuis, een mooi gebouw van Lefranc (1834-1840) bracht de heraanleg van de omgeving mee als een bewonderenswaardig ensemble in neoklassieke stijl, die het uitgangspunt had kunnen zijn van een groots stadsdecor. Maar dat werd niet uitgevoerd en de zeer grote markt kreeg geen uniform uitzicht. In geheel de stad werd veel gebouwd : belangrijke scholen, culturele gebouwen (Ecole des Beaux- Arts, concertzaal, theater, bibliotheek), maar ook de stadsaanleg werd niet verwaarloosd : oprichting of verfraaiing van monumentale fonteinen, bronzen standbeeld van de hertog van Orléans, park op de versterkingen van Vau- ban.
