A comparison between the registers of births and the registers of baptism of an Ile-de-France village for the period from 1806 to 1888 shows the existence of discrepancies in the selection of firstnames given to each child. These discrepancies, mainly the suppression or the addition of a firstname, or the substitution of a firstname for another, are observed more and more after the period 1830. They can often be related to the increasing delay between birth and baptism due to the wish of the parents th'at the godparents attend the ceremony. We can see there the progressive weakening of the religious character of baptism with more emphasis placed on his social aspect, and therefore, an evidence of the dechristianization of the (french) coun...
