First names and baptismal relationships from the Middle Ages to the Counter Reformation. In the West from the Middle Ages to the Modern Era, the personal name (the first name today) was defined as a double family and religious indicator (baptismal name). From the 12th to the 17th centuries the Church focussed primarily on the choice of the name itself. By promoting the great names of the Christian sanctorale and the relationship with the heavenly patron, the Church emphasized the individual function of a name, and though it encountered some resistance from family and social structures, it triumphed in the end. In the field of godparentage, the Church attempted to substitute the secular model based on social usefulness for a religious model which emphasized the moral qualities and pedagogical role of godparents, while prohibiting marriage among their spiritual relations.En Occident du Moyen Age aux Temps modernes, le nom personnel (le prénom actuel) se définit comme un double marqueur familial et religieux (nom de baptême). Du XIIe au XVIIe siècle, l'action de l'Eglise porte d'abord sur le choix même du nom. En promouvant les grands noms du sanctoral chrétien et la relation au patron céleste, l'Eglise privilégie la fonction individuelle du nom, rencontre les résistances des structures familiales et sociales, mais l'emporte finalement. Sur le terrain du parrainage, au modèle profane fondé sur l'utilité sociale, elle s'efforce de substituer un modèle religieux insistant sur les qualités morales et le rôle pédagogique des parrains, tout en frappant la parenté spirituelle d'interdits matrimoniaux.Maurel Christian.
