The High Middle Ages were a period of démographie upheaval resulting from the invasions of the 5th — loth centuries, epidemies, famine, and infant mortality. Rulers were little concerned with the inflection of the demographic curve, but the clerics and monks who guided their policies posited principles concerning marriage and its meaning. They fought contraception, abortion, and infanticide. Bishops were concerned with the fate of abandoned children. The legislation of the barbarian kings introduced laws concerning kidnapping and adultery ; they were anxious to preserve the cohesion of the family.
