A study of family books held by Florentines between 1300 and 1530 reveals a very high fertility , with little to suggest that the members of the urban upper classes consciously attempted to limit their births. Two aspects of this fertility are examined : - Firstly, the restraints implied by the very practices which enabled this high level to be reached. Paid wet-nursing, while leaving young mothers fertile again, must also hâve encouraged a certain birth spacing and therefore planning ; this can be observed in the reduction of the interval between births when an elder child dies prematurely at a young age ; - The influence on fertility of women's age atmarriage.
