The concept of quality of life has evolved. Originally focused on fulfilling basic needs, primarily the right to life and the right to health, it is now developing to take account of other objectives that integrate individual well-being to a greater extent. This evolution is striking in environmental law where pollution cases are handled by the European Court of Human Rights, independently of their implications for health, once they are considered to affect human well-being.
