Le Roman de Dublin : nouvelles figurations

With Dubliners Joyce invented a new genre which made use of the Irish capital not just as a realistic background but as the basis of a specific mode of representation : in the book the city is not just represented but to a certain extent becomes the medium of representation itself. In this regard, the map of the city becomes a narrative diagramme through which all the characters' actions are determined. After Joyce, several generations of novelists have sought to find their own mode of representation of Dublin : McGahern produced a new version of the traditional opposition between city and country, Dermot Bolger relied on the gothic, Roddy Doyle used the resources of orality. The present paper examines three very contemporary novels : Deirdre Madden 's Authenticity, Keith Ridgway 's The Parts, Sean O'Reilly's The Swing of Things, in order to determine whether and how the profound transformations recently appeared in the Dubliners' life-styles, in the aftermath of the Celtic Tiger, have been translated in terms of narrative and stylistic innovations. As the paper shows, the answer is yes, which goes a long way to prove that it is Dublin who for a long time now has enabled Irish writers to espouse the thrusts of modernity and postmodemity.Avec Dubliners Joyce inaugura un véritable sous-genre littéraire qui prend la capitale irlandaise non seulement comme cadre au sens réaliste du terme mais comme source d'un mode de représentation particulier : la ville est à la fois figurée et prise comme figure. Ainsi, la carte de la ville devient une grammaire narrative qui détermine les destinées des personnages. Après lui, plusieurs générations de romanciers ont cherché à renouveler le roman de Dublin, en utilisant également la ville comme décor et en inventant à travers elle un nouveau mode de figuration : McGahern renouvelle l'opposition traditionnelle entre ville et campagne, Bolger se sert du gothique, Doyle privilégie l'oralité. Trois exemples de romans très contemporains sont examinés ici : The Parts de Keidi Ridgway, Authenticity de Deirdre Madden, The Swing of Things de Sean O'Reilly, afin de déterminer si les transformations économiques et sociales intervenues ces dernières années et qui ont profondément modifié les mœurs des Dublinois se sont à nouveau traduites par des évolutions des modes de narration et d'écriture : comme on le verra, la réponse est positive, confirmant l'hypothèse que c'est bien Dublin qui permet aux romanciers irlandais d'épouser le mouvement de la modernité et de la postmodernité.Mikowski Sylvie.
