Why was Ireland Given Special Treatment ? The Awkward State of Franco-Irish Diplomatic Relations, August 1944-March 1945

Presenting some French diplomatic views on neutral Ireland's position at the end of the Second World War, this article explores some reasons motivating the French Provisional Government's exceptional treatment of its Irish diplomatic envoy, Mr Sean Murphy, in the months following the Liberation of Paris. A perusal of files in the Quai d'Orsay suggests that de Gaulle's French Provisional Government wanted to avoid raising the thorny question of Ireland's constitutional status vis-à-vis the British Crown ; but there were other factors at stake, not least of which was the Irish Red Cross's offer to set up a hospital in Normandy.Présentant quelques perspectives diplomatiques françaises sur la situation, à la fin de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, de l'Irlande restée neutre pendant le conflit, cet article analyse les motifs du traitement exceptionnel accordé au chef de mission irlandais après la Libération de Paris. Les dossiers du Quai d'Orsay démontrent que le Gouvernement Provisoire de la République Française cherchait à éviter un éventuel embarras diplomatique, en soulevant la question délicate du statut constitutionnel de l'Irlande vis-à-vis de la Couronne britannique ; mais il y avait d'autres enjeux, parmi lesquels figurait au premier plan l'offre d'un hôpital en Normandie faite par la Croix-Rouge irlandaise.Gaffney Phyllis.
