This paper on working-class Belfast during World War II studies the numerous strikes that have troubled the city, from the governmental archives. It argues that in spite of the numerous patriotic statements on the commitment of Ulster along with Great Britain at war, Northern Ireland loyalism was more inward than outward-looking. The protestant workers were not reluctant to go on strike for reasons that might seem trivial in connection with the necessities of war.
