According to Roman tradition the dead were buried in cemeteries located outside the city, while in the medieval period the cemetery surrounded the church. The encroachment of the dead upon the town appears quite early ; the process began slowly and sporadically, but gained momentum in the Carolingian period. It was fostered by the cult of commemoration and the building of crypts, but the practice of burial inside the cathedrals themselves continued to come up against repeated ecclesiastical prohibitions and remained exceptional.
