During the 2nd and the 1st centuries BC, some Italians, but also some Romans, set off to live in Greece. Many of them died there. Most often, their funerary steles are in Greek, some of them, although very few, are in latin. There are even fewer bilingual steles, around ten. It is not only their rarity that makes them interesting. A thorough analysis shows translations mishaps that seem to make sense. Languages thus turn out to be conceptual systems, as linguists put it, rather than mere tools of communication.Aux IIe et Ier s. av.
