Abstract - An attempt at assessing the state of biogeographical research in France. The author states its assets and handicaps : the consequences of its intermediate position, the weight of the past, the small number of researchers, the focus on French only data, the lack of relations with other scientists, the reduced number of its representatives in State Scientific Committees. He recapitulates the main topical issues, the concepts, methodology and the dual tool : cultural and natural.
