Le « terrain » pour les tropicalistes (Fieldwork for tropicalist geographers)

Abstract. - Fieldwork has always played an important role for geographers doing research in tropical countries. This is due on the one hand, to the lack of information sources (statistics, maps) that must be remedied with observations, interviews, and so on, and on the other hand, to the encounter of the researcher with « exotic » societies embracing different values. Practical circumstances of research have valorised interdisciplinary cooperation with anthropologists and agronomists among others, cooperations made easier by the existence of research organizations such as IRD or CIRAD. Many of the questions raised by the relationship of the geographer with his place of research are not, however, specific to «tropical » specialists but concern all of geography. They go beyond purely methodological problems because fieldwork is part of life : it is a source of pleasure and an element of an art of living.Résumé. - Le terrain a toujours joué un rôle important pour les géographes effectuant des recherches dans les pays tropicaux. Cela tient d'une part aux carences des sources d'information (statistiques, cartes) qu'il faut compenser par des observations, des entretiens etc., et d'autre part à la confrontation du chercheur avec des sociétés «exotiques », porteuses d'autres valeurs. Les conditions pratiques de la recherche ont favorisé les rapprochements disciplinaires avec les anthropologues et les agronomes notamment, rapprochements facilités par l'existence d'organismes comme l'IRD ou le CIRAD. Bien des questions posées par la relation du chercheur avec son terrain ne sont cependant pas spécifiques aux « tropicalistes » mais concernent l'ensemble de la géographie. Elles dépassent en outre les problèmes purement méthodologiques car le terrain relève du vécu : il est source de plaisir et participe d'un art de vivre.Pourtier Roland, Hugonie Gérard.
