Topological Insulators (TI) are characterized by topologically-protected conducting states on their boundaries even though their bulk is insulating. The topological character provides a unique robustness, with ballistic conduction unaffected by weak non-magnetic disorder, in the limit of non-interacting electrons. When combined with superconductivity, TI can host exotic quasi-particles called Majorana bound states that exhibit anyonic physics and constitute the basis of topological quantum computation schemes.
