The starting point for this article is the observation that Jason’s aristeia is recounted twice in the third book of the Argonautica : fi rstly, it is recounted in the set of instructions that Medea gives to Jason and, secondly, it is recounted by the principal narrator. This article investigates the manner in which these two narratives coexist within the text. The fi rst half of this article analyses how Medea’s speech culminates in the set of instructions that she issues to Jason. It examines how this proleptic discourse, at once offers a sketch of Jason’s ordeal and a sketch of the narrative as a whole.
