The 1930 dépression was felt in Africa as a premature and lasting reversal of trends (1928-1935) : commercial straits, the collapse of foreign investment, the banking crisis. Nevertheless, in the strictest sensé the économie reverberations of the Great Depression were relatively attenuated : colonial credit, almost inexistent, hardly suffered. The protectionnist policies operating since 1928 acted as a controlling force on this occasion, in France (the " falling-back " on the Empire) as well as for the colonial firms, who on the whole benefited from an improved exchange rate.
