Between 1640 and 1720 maritime trade between France and Canada was dominated by La Rochelle armateurs and merchants who married their children into the major fur-trading and commercial families of Canada, weaving a trans-Atlantic bond of kinship and commerce. Towards the end of this period, Canada increasingly became an économie anomaly in the French colonial System. As French colonial commerce grew during the 18th century, and even though the colonial population doubled during the quarter of a century before 1738, the volume of trade with Canada remained stable.
