Aristophanes' tragic Homer lambic poetry and tragedy are usually thought to be the major literary sources of ancient comedy. Nevertheless, homeric poetry and Homer himself do play their part in Aristophanes' comedies, and a very special one. We shall see that there are in fact more quotations of homeric poetry than one would think at first. Moreover, those quotations do not beloiig to a tradition of homeric quotations but are specific to Aristophanes. When not, those quotations are in fact parodies of tragic quotations from Homer, that are to be understood within the frame of the agonistic relationships opposing tragedy and comedy.
