Some aspects of the suburban growth in Philadelphia Metropolitan Area : Upper Merion. — Upper Merion township is located 16 miles north-west of Philadelphia; since 1958 it is the hub of an outstanding network of expressways. The two main arteries are the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the Schuylkill Expressway. The rapid population growth of the township within the last twenty years is similar to those of suburban areas that experienced sudden growth with the widespread ownership of automobiles. Upper Merion labor force (resident and non resident) grew from 1 000 to 23 000 between 1950 and 1970; industrial employment numbers to 10 000 persons and is practically unrelated to the old industry located in nearby Norristown.
