Slovenes in Austria.. Slovenes in Austria are one of Europe's smaller national minorities, officially numbering 17,000 but estimated at around 45,000. Over the past 150 years they have lived through practically all forms of cohabitation between the two nations; from initial tolerance to later economic, cultural and political conflict, followed by military clashes, planned assimilation and attempts to forcibly disperse the minority, to the re- establishment of harmony and cooperation. During this time, the process of modernisation was carried out in three stages : agrarian, industrial and tertiary.
