Summary. — Though its ethnic structure is less complex than it was years ago, the Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia — a total population of 1 650 000 — still appears as a patchwork of nationalities : there are a few scores of neighbour Serbs, Greeks and Bulgarians. Most Jews disappeared during the Second World ! War and so did the Turks, Cherkesses and Torbeshes — local muslim Slavs — who emigrated to Turkey soon after it ; the indigenous Vlachs are following various acculturation patterns leading to their end as a distinct group.
