The first part of the paper discusses NMR techniques designed for determining whether the magnetic space group is generated by the crystallographic space group or one of its subgroups. Special attention is given to the situation in which the inversion symmetry of the crystallographic group does not appear in the magnetic group. In the later parts of the paper two experimental examples of this situation which occur in FeCl2.4H2O and Cu(CO3)2(OH)2 are presented and discussed.</p
