The Aristotelian justification of the principle of non-contradiction (PNC) by the argument of «retortion» is correct, on the condition that it is not envisaged as a demonstration, whether indirect or inductive. As with all first principles of knowledge, the PNC cannot be demonstrated, since it is anterior to any demonstration that must presuppose it. Following Gaston Isaye, the A. defends the thesis that the value of this Aristotelian argument rests not on the simple refutation of an adversary, but on the manifestation post factum of an implicit agreement, at the level of the act performed, that exists between those in dialogue.
