The status of the commune in the constitutional system of Yugoslavia. This article is concerned with examining the part played by the commune, as laid down in the constitution, within the Yugoslav system. The commune is defined as the basic self-managing socio-political community (collectivity) in effect the basis of the system of self-management. The author traces the history of the commune in Yugoslavia, from the popular liberation committees set up in 1941, to the commune as it emerged under the legal provisions of the Constitution of 1974, including the introduction of self-management in 1950 (under a Fundamental Law relating to the management of State economic enterprises, and larger-scale economic associations, by workers' collectiv...
