The Ethical Content of Chinese Socialism. The foreign observer in a "socialist" country is struck by the impression of solidity and force emanating from the regime. In socialist China the hold appears even stronger than elsewhere. In this context, the following factors are noteworthy: the identification with the cause of national independence, the extent of physical controls (although evident, they do not appear to be particularly heavy), and finally the ethical content. In the Chinese experiment the fundamental ethic of socialism appears much more clearly than it does in the European ones.
