China : From Socialist Transition to Capitalist Transition ? At a time when China's orientation is once again in question, this article attempts to synthesize China's economic evolution since 1978. Drawing up a rough statistical balance sheet as a starting point, the article puts into perspective the various elements of the dialectic which has confronted the reform undertaken by Deng Xiaoping since 1978, with the bureaucratic and Stalinist system set up in the 1950s. After much vacillation the former materialized in the ambitious project adopted during the October 1984 Plenum.
