In Indo-European mythology, the horse is frequently associated with the god of medicine or gods who have to do with medicine: Cheiron the Centaur, Lug Atepomaros, the divine twins (Aśvin «horsemen», Dioskouroi). The name of the most famous physician himself, Hippocrates, is compound with * ekwo-. Benveniste (RHR 130, 1945, p. 5-12) has shown that Indo-European medicine rely on the three functions: the healing is obtained by knife, by plants, by charms. We try to demonstrate that the horse has been chosen to accompany the mythical doctors because this animal corresponds to this definition: he is supposed to be prophetic; he is chthonian and in relation to Hades like Asclepios restoring dead people; his blood falling on earth in the sacrifice...
