Un monument baroque dans les steppes du Kazakhstan : le tombeau d'Örqina Khatun, princesse Chaghatay ?

The so-called mausoleum of 'Aysha Bibi at Taraz, in the south of Khazakhstan, is commonly dated to the 11th-12th century. A new analysis of its decoration, based on precise drawings, shows its close resemblance (in plan, elevation and composition of its façades) with the mausoleum of the Samanids, built in Bukhara in the 9th century. Four different traditions influenced the decoration of the mausoleum of Taraz. The Islamic tradition is revealed in the composition of the façades and the use of starshaped terra-cotta tiles. From the Buddhist tradition, the artists working on this mausoleum borrowed the technique of covering the walls with ornamental tiles. From the Chinese tradition, they borrowed a peony pattern to decorate the capitals. Finally, the inner ornamentation of the tiles covering the monument are reminiscent, in a very stylized way, of motifs of the Art of the Steppes. The presence of the Chinese peony flower, never reproduced in Persia and Central Asia before the middle of the 13th century, provides a reliable chronological indication for dating the mausoleum. At that time, Taraz belonged to the Chaghatay kingdom and the person most likely to have ordered the building of the mausoleum was Örqina Khatun, spouse of the Khan Qara Hülegü and, as his widow, regent of the kingdom from about 1240 to 1266. Her personality (a Mongol Buddhist who converted to Islam), as well as the place where the mausoleum was built (on the road linking China with Central Asia) can explain the strong hybrid nature of the monument.Le mausolée dit de 'Aysha Bibi, situé à Taraz, au sud du Kazakhstan, a été jusqu'à présent attribué aux XIe-XIIe s. Une nouvelle analyse du monument, basée sur un relevé graphique minutieux, a montré son étroite ressemblance (plan, élévation et composition des façades) avec le mausolée édifié par les Samanides à Boukhara, au IXe s. En revanche, son décor très composite est marqué par quatre traditions décoratives distinctes : la tradition islamique d'Asie centrale, qui se révèle dans la composition décorative des façades et les carreaux de revêtement en forme d'étoile ; la tradition bouddhique, à laquelle le monument emprunte son placage de briques ornementales ; la tradition chinoise, à laquelle il doit les fleurs de pivoines qui ornent ses chapiteaux, enfin l'art des steppes, dont des motifs extrêmement stylisés ornent l'intérieur des plaques de son revêtement. C'est l'emprunt du motif chinois de la pivoine, jamais reproduit en Iran ni en Asie centrale avant le milieu du XIIIe s., qui a livré l'indice chronologique le plus sûr pour dater le mausolée. A cette époque, Taraz appartenait à l'empire Chaghatay et le personnage de cet empire le plus susceptible d'avoir fait ériger ce monument est Örqina Khatun, épouse du Khan Qara Hülegü puis régente du royaume, d'environ 1240 à 1266. La personnalité de cette princesse - une Mongole bouddhiste convertie à l'islam - aussi bien que l'endroit où le mausolée a été érigé - sur l'une des voies reliant l'Asie centrale à la Chine - peuvent expliquer son caractère hybride.Kervran Monique.
