The Mayidari-yin juu, a fortified Buddhist temple founded in 1575 by Altan qan of the Tümed tribe, 70 km west of Hohhot in Southern Mongolia (Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China), has preserved important murals painted during the first half of the 17th century. The Mongol donors who financed the 1606 constructions and restorations, are portrayed in the lower part of the Western wall of the sanctuary. Jünggen qatun, Altan qan's famous third wife, and Macay qatun facing the Mayidari qutuytu, are figured in the middle of the two parts of the painting. The variety of the costumes, hats and hairstyles, makes this painting a unique ethnographical document in Southern Mongolia. This mural is thus the result of the encounter between religious f...
