Palynological, foraminiferal and sedimentological studies as well as radiometric dating have been carried out on several deposits from the estuary of the Bidasoa (southeast of the Bay of Biscay). These results and their comparison with others from the Cantabrian region (northern Spain) have allowed the establishment of a relationship between vegetational succession and relative sea-level fluctuations during the Holocene. The spread of Alnus in this region, between 6000 and 4S00 BP, is contemporaneous with a phase of marine retreat which has been identified in the southeastern part of the Bay of Biscay (5 800-4900 BP).
