Gabriel Andral (1797-1876).

SUMMARY. — Andral, contemporary of Laennec and Pasteur, is an examplary witness of the evolution of French Medicine of the XIXth century. Excellent clinician, he sizes perfectly the limits of clinicism and of the solidist theories on which he based himself. He understood that the theories of that time were insufficient to explain the facts which enlightened medicine every day and introduced a modern humoralism whose basis was chemical and microscopic hematology. To the problems created by clinicians, it is not to the pathological anatomy to answer, but the physiology of his friend Claude Bernard. Local pathology must also be completed by general pathology. This has been the lesson of Andral who opened the door to laboratory medicine. Still in his youth, he was considered by Laennec as one of the most brilliant hopes of medicine.RESUME. — Andral, contemporain à la fois de Laennec et de Pasteur, est un modèle exemplaire de l'évolution de la médecine au XIXe siècle. Excellent clinicien et considéré par Laennec comme un des plus brillants espoirs de l'Ecole française, il a parfaitement pris conscience des limites du clinicisme et des théories solidistes qui avaient été son propre point de départ. Il a compris que les systèmes de son temps ne pouvaient rendre compte des acquisitions positives de la science et il introduisit un nouvel Immoralisme basé sur la chimie et l'hématologie microscopique. Aux problèmes posés par la clinique il pensait que ce n'était plus à l'anatomie pathologique de répondre, mais à la physiologie de son ami Claude Bernard. Il a ainsi été un des pionniers de la médecine de laboratoire qui devait prendre la relève de la médecine d'hôpital.
