Abstract. This article compares the methods and the results achieved by the different functional classifications of big French cities made since 1950. The first part analyses the classifications of cities according to the distribution of their labour in the different economical activities. Most of them are purely descriptive or re-use some elements of the economical basis theory. They suggest more or less fine distributions from the main opposition between secondary and tertiary cities. Other methods, more sophisticated, and used for correlative or evolutive studies, have not yet given all the results which could be expected.
