L'organisation de l'espace géographique par les villes Yoruba. L'exemple d'Abèokuta

Abèokuta, a provincial capital in the Yoruba Country. The Yoruba Country, Nigeria, has a very high urbanization rate which ranks third in the world after Great Britain and West Germany. Abèokuta constitutes an original type among the 136 cities of the region : it was built up in 1830 after intertribal feuds which were first due to the invasion of the southern part of the country by the Fulani ; now it is the sole urban area for the whole Egba people, a subdivision of the Yoruba. This fortified city became rapidly a haven of relative peace and thus attracted, among others, the former Egba slaves freed and settled by the English in Sierra Leone. The urban structure of Abèokuta reflects the historical and human vicissitudes it has known during its growth . The turmoil of war which the city grew in explains the uttermost compacity of habitat, the chaotic juxtaposition of blocks and the presence of bush-islets between them ; likewise the « Brazilian ambiance» of some districts is due to the Sierra-Leoners coming from Brazilian plantations. To-day Abèokuta still is an important town in the midst of independent Nigeria for, in spite of an often troubled growth, it has been able to adapt itself to new conditions.Le pays yoruba, situé au Nigeria, a un taux d'urbanisation très élevé qui le place au 3e rang mondial après la Grande-Bretagne et l'Allemagne. Des 136 villes que compte cette région, Abèokuta occupe une place particulière : créée en 1830 à la suite de rivalités intertribales initialement provoquées par la descente, du nord du pays vers le sud, de conquérants Fulani, elle constitue l'unique agglomération urbaine de tout un sous-groupe du peuple Yoruba, les Egba. Cette ville forteresse se révéla vite être un havre de paix relative, attirant notamment les esclaves Egba libérés et installés par les Anglais en Sierra Leone. Abèokuta reflète dans sa structure urbaine les péripéties historiques et humaines de sa genèse. L'extrême compacité de l'habitat, le chaos de la juxtaposition des quartiers et la présence d'îlots broussailleux entre ceux-ci, tout cela est à mettre au compte de la tourmente guerrière qui présida à la fondation de la cité ; de même l'« atmosphère brési lienne » qui se dégage de certains secteurs urbains a été introduite par les « Sierra-Léonais » venant des plantations du Brésil. Aujourd'hui, dans le cadre de l'indépendance du Nigeria, Abèokuta est encore une ville importante.
