Abèokuta, a provincial capital in the Yoruba Country. The Yoruba Country, Nigeria, has a very high urbanization rate which ranks third in the world after Great Britain and West Germany. Abèokuta constitutes an original type among the 136 cities of the region : it was built up in 1830 after intertribal feuds which were first due to the invasion of the southern part of the country by the Fulani ; now it is the sole urban area for the whole Egba people, a subdivision of the Yoruba. This fortified city became rapidly a haven of relative peace and thus attracted, among others, the former Egba slaves freed and settled by the English in Sierra Leone.
