A Judicial Appointment under the Third Republic The example of the promotion of an Attorney General in the 1930s offers insight into how the system of political recommendations actually worked. In the long run, this system played a decisive role in keeping the judicial body in line and followed a code of special rules. This analysis, which reveals how the magistrature was at stake in partisan and patronage issues, leads to a more qualified view of Jacobin interpretations of the legal system and shows that the examining judge remained largely outside the movement in favour of independence begun by high-ranking civil servants under the Third Republic.■ Alain Bancaud: Une nomination judiciaire sous la IIIe République L'exemple de la promotion ...
