Anne-Marie Duranton-Crabol, The Exile of French Intellectuals to the United States during World War II: A Return Migration. French historiography has for a long time ignored the exile of French intellectuals during World War II. These writers and academics themselves seem to have seen their migration as a temporary refuge linked to the circumstances of French defeat. Their main concern was the maintainance of French culture as distinct from that embodied by the Vichy government. On the American side, although predictable, their return was often felt as a disappointment especially by those who had organized their rescue.
