At the end of the war, several collaborationist intellectuals tried to find a refuge in Switzerland. In spring 1945, a first group ran up against a most restrictive policy. Bern was afraid to annoy Paris. In 1947, with the start of the Cold War, a second group found accommodation easier. Many intellectuals obtained tolerance for their stay, and sometimes even got the provisional status of political refugee. Federal authorities asked them to behave discreetly. They tried to avoid press scandals orchestrated by the left wing, more than show concern about France, which seemed at that time to ignore the issue.
