High efficiency of solar cells has become an important factor for cost reduction of solar arrays. Curves are presented to find the most favorable starting point to increase the efficiency of solar cells of different design and manufactured by varied technologies. Special attention is given to the desing of the top contact and to the passivation of emitter and rear side. Passivating the emitter can raise the efficiency up to 3% absolutely. Applying an additional BSF even of mediocre effectiveness will boost the efficiency another 1% absolutely
