High-Efficiency-Solar-Cells can lead to a strong cost reduction of solar arrays even with considerably increased cell production costs. Therefore research and development programs around the world aim at drastic improvements of crystalline solar cell efficiencies. Manufacturing of high efficiency cells in high yield and with little variation of the parameters requires sophisticated semiconductor technology. For solar cells based on crystalline silicon the main routes for achieving high efficiencies are outlined. (ISE
