The number of people aged 65 and over in the Soviet Union has risen to move than 9% of the general population since 1975; however, disparities between republics, between rural and urban areas, and especially between men and women, are particularly striking. More than 70 % of the elderly receive pensions, but these are often small, because they are not re-valued. This fraction of the population can thus be used as a pool of labour to fill low-prestige jobs, to help families and to increase the labour supply, which is at present insufficient because of low birth rates during the last war.
