SUMMARY As in many other colonized countries, the population of the islands which form to-day French Polynesia had first decreased and was even on the verge of extinction. Since the turn of the century, this population has been on the upgrade and, due to a rapid growth, now reaches more than 120 000 inhabitants. Birth-rate is not far from 45 %0 whereas death rate is not higher than 10 %0; the natural growth rate reaches 3,5 % per year and this increase might cause economic problems in a near future. Life expectancy at birth is about 58 years (57 for men and 59 for women) very close to that of Maoris of New Zealand. Some characteristics of European populations can be observed in this population in which however birth control is not practised...
