Afro-Asian States : Actors on, or Challenges for, the International Political Stage ? by Henry Laurens The Bandung conference had tremendous international repercussions. It originated in various anticolonial movements, the oldest of which date from the 19th century, but also in a political environment specifie to the mid-fifties, when the Third World was becoming the major issue in East-West rivalry. The movement's failure is directly connected to the development strategies that were adopted and to the authoritarianism of the principal leaders.
