Summary In the framework of a three-level type of mnemonic activity, this study investigated the establishment of backward and forward associative links hypothetically acquired after a one-trial acquisition of a series of words. The primary effect depends on a more stable consolidation of mnemonic traces (i.e., middle-term memory), than the recency effect (i.e., short-term memory). In this experiment two methods of measurement were used : free recall of the words E-T or probed recall of the words E-S. Two acquisition methods were given to the subject : to learn keeping the order (of E-T) in mind and to learn disregarding the order.
