Polycythaemia vera (PV) is one of the Philadelphia-negative chronic myeloproliferative disorders. The aetiology of the disease is not fully elucidated; however, it mostly relies on the clonal proliferation of the multipotent haematopoietic stem cell, which causes excessive proliferation of the granulocytic, megakaryocytic, but above all erythroid lineages. The clonal haematopoiesis-promoting JAK2 V617F gene mutation, which is present in approximately 95% of patients, represents one of the basic diagnostic criteria. The arterial and venous thrombotic events account for major causes of complications and mortality in patients with polycythaemia.
