NEP1-ähnliche Proteine oder NLPs (NEP1-like Proteins) wurden nach dem ersten identifizierten Protein dieser Art benannt, NEP1 (Necrosis- and ethylene-inducing peptide 1) aus Fusarium oxysporum. Erstmals beschrieben wurden diese Proteine aufgrund ihrer Eigenschaft, in zweikeimblättrigen Pflanzen Reaktionen der pflanzlichen Immunabwehr auszulösen. Die NLP-Familie umfasst Mitglieder aus Oomyzeten, Pilzen und Bakterien. Nekrotisierende Formen wurden bislang nur in Pathogenen mit nektrotropher oder hemibiotropher Lebensweise identifiziert.
