Der Begriff des Kinderdefizits beschreibt die Differenz zwischen der Kindersterblichkeitsrate einer Epoche und der tatsächlichen Anzahl an Kinderbestattungen, die für diese Zeit archäologisch fassbar ist. Vor allem für das Frühmittelalter wird von einem Kinderdefizit ausgegangen. Auf der einen Seite steht die Annahme einer Kindersterblichkeitsrate für das Frühmittelalter von rund fünfzig Prozent. Auf der anderen Seite ergibt sich aber ein wesentlich geringerer Anteil an Kinderskeletten auf Bestattungsplätzen. Diese Arbeit stellt zum einen dar, dass es keinen Beleg dafür gibt, dass im Mittelalter die Hälfte aller Kinder starb.
