Entlang seines Lebenswegs von Umbrien nach Rom beschreibt der Autor detailliert ausgewählte Werke, die er in einem größeren Kontext von formalen, ikonographischen, theoretischen und kulturellen Fragen analysiert. Die einführenden Kapitel behandeln die zeitgenössische Kunsttheorie der Renaissance, namentlich Alberti, Leonardo da Vinci und Baldesar Castiglione, die Verwendung von Gesten in anderen Gebieten, wie zum Beispiel Liturgie oder Rechtssprechung, und stellen eine Art Verzeichnis der von Raffael am häufigsten verwendeten Gesten zusammen.
