Protective effect of new sealants for the enamel surface during the medical treatment with orthodontic brackets in vivo

Demineralisationen und „white spot“-Läsionen des Schmelzes sind unerwünschte Nebeneffekte bei der kieferorthopädischen Behandlung mit festsitzenden Apparaturen. Eine Versiegelung der Zahnflächen ist daher eine oft empfohlene Methode um die Ausbildung von Initialkaries zu verhindern. Das Ziel der vorliegenden in vivo Studie war es, zwei in deutschen Praxen gängige Produkte [„Light bond®“ der Firma „ Reliance“; „Protecto®“ der Firma“ BonaDent“] im Hinblick auf ihre Effektivität zu untersuchen und miteinander zu vergleichen. Für diesen Zweck wurden 40 randomisierte Patienten mit neuer Multiband-Eingliederung ausgewählt und untersucht. Die Ergebnisse waren eindeutig. Bei allen Gruppen traten während des angesetzten Untersuchungszeitraums Demineralisationen und „white spot“-Läsionen annähernd gleich häufig auf. Somit konnte kein positiver Einfluss der zu untersuchenden Versiegelungen auf die Manifestation von initialkariösen Läsionen nachgewiesen werden.Demineralization and white-spot lesions are undesired side effects during the medical treatment with orthodontic brackets. The protective sealing of the enamel surface is an often recommended method in german dental clinics to avoid white-spot formation. The objective of this disseratation was to probe and to compare the protective effect of two often used sealants [„Reliance-Light bond®“ and „BonaDent-Protecto®“]. For this purpose 40 patients who required orthodontic treatment with brackets were randomly picked and ambulant examined. The results were unambiguous. At the end of this experimental study nearly all groups had equally often developed white spot lesions und demineralizations. So there was no proof of any positive effect on the clinical manifestation of white-spot formation during the treatment with orthodontic brackets
