The temporomandibular joint disc is a fibrocartilaginous structure, composed of collagen fibers, elastin fibers, and proteoglycans. Despite the crucial role of elastin fibers in load-bearing properties of connective tissues, its contribution in temporomandibular joint disc biomechanics has been disregarded.
